Stock for Sale

We have a bit of a rethink about how we want to take life forward over the next few years so we have decided to cut back on stock numbers. This means that some of our beautiful Shetland cattle are for sale through no fault of their own.

There are five for sale in total, all are of a larger build and well suited to crossing with bigger breeds. All have purebred Shetland calves at foot and could be put back in calf by our Shetland bull. As four out of the five have heifer calves at foot they represent an ideal group for someone wanting to get started in Shetland cattle- wise person! The cattle are known for being hardy, thrifty easy, to calve and darn good mothers. Not just all of that – the meat tastes darn good too. Price £700 each to include the calf at foot and transport to Kirkwall

Gilda- virtually all black, born in 2000, heifer calf at foot born 4.05.08. Calf is mostly black with white socks. Has been hand milked. She is generally fine but can get a little grumpy at calving although she is getting better each year

Gemma- with quite a lot of white, half sister to Gilda, again born in 2000, stott calf at foot born 6.06.08. Super temperament, she has been hand milked.

Inga- black and white, born in 2002, heifer calf at foot born 5.05.08. Calf is black and white and very cheeky. Good temperament and again she has been hand milked

Hiedi- black and white, Gilda’s daughter born in 2005, heifer calf at foot born1.05.08. Calf is mostly black with the odd dash of white. Reasonable temperament, can take a little while after calving before she will stand for the calf to suck but she is not aggressive to the calf at all, just fidgets away.

Ruby- black with white socks, Gemma’s daughter born in 2005, heifer calf at foot born 13.05.08. Same super temperament as her mother and again has been hand milked.

All would winter out quite happily in a milder climate than we have here. Don’t worry about the ages of Gilda and Gemma; they are just coming into their prime.

Hebridean Sheep

The ewe lambs from this year’s crop will be for sale in the autumn. There are 16 of them. The Hebrideans are noted to be hardy and thrifty, easy to lamb and darn good mothers and yes the meat does taste good. As we do not routinely experience any problems the flock is not vaccinated at all. The lambs would not be shipped until mid November; by which time the ewes have weaned the lambs off themselves. We would also look at letting some of the younger ewes go as well- we have a few that were born in 2003 and 2005. Prices: lambs £45 each, ewes £60 each to include transport to Kirkwall.
